Evaluation

I am very pleased with my video and i think that i have learn't a lot on this project.I think my music video really keeps in with the themes of the genre and is the same style of the real Streets videos for example walking along the street talking to the camera. One the left is a picture of my video and the actor walking and on the right below is mike skinner walking along the street.

Another example is the locations that both have been set in on the left you can see the council flats that where mine if filmed and on the right is an council estate that the streets filmed in.

Another thing i took from the streets videos is that they talk staight to the camera. On the left is my music video and on the right the streets.

I think my promotional pack is quite good and it has the same style as the streets have. the album cover of the streets album and my digipak have the same themes. We both have set ours with council estates in the background. This really fits in with the genre of music. i think that my digipak and my advert are very closely linked to my video.

I learn't a lot from my feedback and the coments that i had where really good. I put my video onto youtube and one of the comments that it has on it is this. "The camera work and the cinematography is really good, especially on the long shots of the main actor walking. The connection between the audience and the 2 actors is really good as well. The only thing i'd suggest is that you could have played around with the colour levels or maybe a filter to try and detract from the 'hellish' background." This comment i thought was really good and fair comment but i chose to not play around with the colour levels as i wanted it to look like a natural conversation. I also put the video onto my facebook and some of the comments on that where "i like the flow on the video looks very good" and "some of the lib sinking is a bit out but the changes in the shots a really good" I think that these comments are pretty fair and give me something to think about next time. I also put my advert and digipak onto my facebook and also got some really good feed back for me to think about next time.

The technology i used was really good and made doing this project so much easier. We used Final cut pro to edit the footage we got which was really easy after you got used to it. I had used it a few times before so i picked it up pretty quick. Using this made it easier to the the footage together and hand have the track and visual different unlike Imovie. Also using the camera and tripod was very interesting and that was the first time that i have properly used one. I learn't lots of different things for example how to set all the levels for the camera and focusing the camera all stuff i didn't no how to use before. Using the tripod made it a lot easier to get the smooth shots that i wanted.

If i was todo the project again the things i think i need to think about are probley getting the shooting done as quick as i can and make sure that the timing is perfect so it seem realistic

Advert

This is my advert for the album. I have kept the same themes with the pictures being in a council estate. I put this on my facebook and here are some of the comments that it got.

"I liked the use of different colours which really catches the eye which i think is really good."

"I like the fact that the video, digipak and advert are all liked and have the same themes"

" The Q 4 stars are really good and make the advert look real also like the costume that guy is wearing good style"

Storyboard

These are pictures of my storyboard. Lots of my shots are medium and close up as i want my video to seem like the actor is telling it to the audience and its important to look like a conversation. I have chosen to cut between some studio shots and some shots in the estate. This ill help it give the right feel to the video.

In this project i did a bit of everything probley the most i did was some editing as i have used final cut a few times before so kind of knew what i was doing but learnt a lot more which was really good. I did a bit of filming aswell to get used to the cameras and learn how to use them.

video analysis

The Streets Dry your eyes mate

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vVaLssMAgY8

the video represents him being alone and how he is sad that he had just come out of a relationship. The video shows him doing everyday things but with his dog. This could be seen as the dog is the only person that he has. I like the use of looking into the camera so it seems like hes telling you are story which he does in lots of his music videos and lots of his songs are story's. I think the video communicates a really clear meaning about being alone and the sadness of just coming out of a realtionship. The video and song are very closely linked and i think the whole video really works with the song and lyrics

The Streets dont mug yourself

This video is also done by telling a story and the ways that mike skinner looks into the camera to show that he is talking to you really makes it feel like this. I really like how the scene just changes which shows that throughout the day he was always thinking about the girl he went out with. The song in its self has quite a strong meaning and i think that the video helps alot to push the meaning forward

Rejected footage

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnSohqPzhuk&feature=related

I chose not to use this shot as their was a mum and her young child walking through the shot and i would have had to asked for their permission to be in the video and when i pictured the shot it was just him walking along with no one else in shot

Creative camera use

I choose not to use any fancy effects as i wanted my music video to have a realistic feel to it and be very flowing and to keep with the lyrics of the song. I think that lots of different effects can give the impression of different things for example cross fades give the impression that time has gone by. I think for my music video none of these techniques apply and its all about making the editing between the shots look good and smooth.

Health and safety

When going to the places where i was going to film i looked for possible health and safety hazards that might currupt the filiming. half of my music video was filmed outside in the street. As we where walking around the streets we had to be careful that we didn't film or use any film that had people init that we didnt ask for thier permission to be in the video. Also had to make sure that no cars where driving past when filming as in some shots the actor was walking in the road. The other half was filmed in a studio. I had to make sure that all the cables where tapped down so noone will trip over them. Also to make sure the door was assable if thier was a fire in the building

mise-en-scene

setting/location

My music video will be set on the streets with the camera following the actor while walking through an housing estate. There will also be a shot in a studio. For both of these i will be shooting different shots and angles so i have a lot of different angles to use in my video. Shooting the music video in a housing estate is meant to give it a ruff feel and make it fit in with the UK garage image. Shooting part of it in the studio is very important i think as the audience will be seeing the gritty part of the UK garage scene but at the same time will see that they are in a studio making it happen.

Costume

The actor that is playing Mike Skinner in my video will be wearing fashionable clothes for the type of music this is and will be modeled on mike skinner and what he wears. His style is very relaxed and a bit scruffy but at the same time he wears designer labels. This relates to the genre of music that it is. My actor will be wearing different things in the studio and street scenes as this will show that they where done at different times. as i thought about having it all done in the same costume so it looks like he is walking to the studio but then i didn't really like that idea.

Props

Apart from all the mics in the studio then there is not much that is going to be used. In the street shot there will be a cigerette used. This will show the urban feel that lots of The Streets music videos have.

Initial Ideas

lots of the streets music videos are done straight to the camera and like a story tell way as lots of the songs are stories. I going to keep with this theme by having one person singing along to the song walking along a road being filmed from a car. Keeping with the UK garage theme it is going to filmed in a ruff looking estate as the lyrics to the song give it a ruff and hard feel "Going through hell". Key lines are going to be acted out to give it a bit more going on for example the line "I wouldn't say a word till I've walked a mile in your shoes(the actor would take his shoe off while walking and singing and show it to the camera),But once a mile from you,(then would just chuck it behind him).

There is also going to be shots from a studio that i can use which will be someone singing and recording the song. This shot will mostly be used for the chorus of the song but also can be used for other lines. I think these two ideas edited together will work really well as it will have the feel of a UK garage song and the same kind of theme as a Streets music video but will also show that this song is a serious and real song and show how The streets are serious about their music which they have in their music videos.

One of the things i am uncertain on is to film the bits in the street in the day or the night where the night will give it a better fitting into the song as its pretty dark but the lighting would be hard to do in the street if we are going to be constantly be moving.

I will also film other shots like the housing estate by its self and in the studio the mixing desk so if they are needed to be put in then i can to fill a apart of the song. The housing estate shot by its self will be used for the establishing shot for the music video.

Target Audience

The streets are Uk garage which is mainly focused at an male audience this is shown on his face book at everyone who comments are male. The Uk garage scene is not main stream so their audience isn't growing by the minute but they have a big following with the target audience being 15-25 as where they appeal more to the younger side of this most the time mike skinner himself is 32 and his lyrics are of his recent past that would relate to people of that age. On the right hand side you see an NME magazine front cover that has a bit on The streets on it which is aimed at an audince 16-30. The streets relate there songs alot to drugs, alchol and the problems with money which shows that the songs are aimed at a older audince. "Tune reminds me of my first e,polite, unique, still sixteen and feeling horny" this is a line from one of thier songs which is talking about drugs and sex at the age of sixteen. In his later albums the songs are not so much about doing drugs and sex but more about his life and how his life has changed because of the fame. This i think is because of his age and that he has grown up sinse the first album.

permission the streets

It is very important in the music industry to have copyright because otherwise bands could copy other bands music and get away with it and artists wouldn't be able to have security over their music.

song choice the streets

The song i have chosen is The Streets, Going through hell. i chose this song as the lyrics have lots of different things going on in them and i think that it will help me think of lots of different ideas on the music video. The other song that was close was by The Streets Where my heart has been. but i didn't choose this one because it was a bit too up beat and i didn't think i would be able to make such a good video for it.

It's not the size of the dog in the fight,
But the fight and the dog,
Let's surprise and take a slog,
And if you get a knife from behind,
Know you're nice and infront,
Do it, do it!
I wouldn't say a word till I've walked a mile in your shoes,
But once a mile from you,
I'll utter what the fuck i choose,
Wearing nice new shoes.
Do it, do it!

[Chorus:]
If you're going through hell!
If you're going through hell!
If you're going through hell!
If you're going through hell!
Keep going!

Fall down five times,
Rise up six,
Give the good news by way of fists,
The mind plays tricks on the fighter who wishes,
Kindness is right and both sides win,
Push the limits of stubbornness to,
Finish up above the stubbornness of silly limits,
Run the ring around your finger,
And build the ring around to bring it, bring it!

[Chorus:]
If you're going through hell!
If you're going through hell!
If you're going through hell!
If you're going through hell!
Keep going!

If you can't join them, beat them!
If you won't 'roid up, be friends!
The joy of the fight is the fight in the boy,
I'm making this up now, finding a point,
Is it if you can't win, then run,
The coming two fists is the fun of the thing,
It's all just lads, and the normal abience,
For a stabbing, call an abulance,

I can resist anything, but temptation,
Lead me not into that place,
I can find it myself.
I can resist anything, but temptation,
Lead me not into that place,
I can find it myself.

Found it.

Your hero is only ordinary,
Is just a hero, a moment more than you and me,
You have nothing to lose, but your chains,
So it maybe might rain,
And yeah, maybe slight pain,
Or a day light slayn,
Do it, do it!

At the end of the tunnel,
There is always light,
It just might be a train.
Beefy!

[Chorus:]
If you're going through hell! (Been there)
If you're going through hell! (Been there, done that)
If you're going through hell! (Got the t-shirt)
If you're going through hell!
Keep going!
